Google Earth Rules…
I mentioned Google Earth in my last entry. Being unmotivated this morning, and dreaming of fireworks I can buy in South Carolina on my drive out of here today, I decided to start checking it out.
This is freaking cool! It gives you zoom in/out, rotate, tilt up and down, so you can get a lot of different views of what you’re looking at. It has conveniently saved locations, such as Mount St. Helens, the Grand Canyon, and Area 51. It gives you a globe, and you can rotate and pan anywhere in the world.
So I started cruising. Found Hawaii, that was pretty cool. Decided to rotate over to Taiwan, since I’d been there before. Checked out downtown Baghdad. And since the recent realization that Delta is flying non-stop from here to Moscow, I decided to look for Moscow.
I did a search for downtown Moscow, and decided to look for the Kremlin. I had the below photo, found on a web site, as a template of what to look for:
And a quick look, rotate, zoom and tilt gave me this from Google Earth:
We live in pretty amazing times. I can sit here in Marietta, Georgia, get onto my PC, and just cruise over and find satellite imagery of the Kremlin. It’s a minor thing, but it makes the world that much smaller, and brings us all closer together. I feel very, very lucky, because just as television transformed the world 50 years ago, I am alive and part of the next communication revolution, the Internet. It’s a great time to be alive.
(In other news, I’m going out of town for the weekend. I may not post much, but rest assured that I’ll get the Carnival of Liberty up and running on Monday. To all, have a great weekend and holiday, and remember what it is we’re celebrating!)
