Quick ones…

Searchlight Crusade finds reintroducing big species like elephants, big cats, etc into North America to be “an interesting idea”. Found at this link:

Scientists are proposing reintroducing large mammals such as elephants, lions, cheetahs and wild horses to North America to replace populations lost 13,000 years ago.

The scientists say that not only could large tracts of North America act as breeding sanctuaries for species of large wild animals under threat in Africa and Asia, but that such ecological history parks could be major tourist attractions.

Yeah. Sounds good. What are we going to do the first time a lion mauls some girl scout? Anyone pay any attention to what the introduction of kudzu did to the South? I don’t think this is such a good idea…

Forward Biased brings us a story about a new law in North Carolina forcing courts to give information regarding concealed carry permits to battered spouses. Having a friend who works as a lawyer providing legal aid for battered women in North Carolina, I’ve seen the anguish and worry she goes through knowing that her clients are unprotected, as the cops do almost nothing to enforce restraining orders. I think the best possible thing that could happen for these women is the sense of self-confidence and empowerment that they could learn through owning firearms. And if a couple of these assholes get offed in the process, it will do a lot more to deter future disobediance of restraining orders than the threat of a night in jail.

Last, Cutting Edge of Ecstacy brings us a new approach to customer support:

LaChania Govan said she got bounced around by her cable company when she called to complain. She made dozens of calls and was even transferred to a person who spoke Spanish — a language she doesn’t understand.

But when she got her August bill from Comcast she had no trouble understanding she’d made somebody mad. It was addressed to “Bitch Dog.”

That’s sad… That’s really sad. But I just can’t stop thinking about the look on this lady’s face when she got her bill addressed to “Bitch Dog”. That would have been priceless. One quick question though, if the bill is addressed to “Bitch Dog”, does she still have to pay it?

Update: I spoke with that lawyer friend about the NC law. She brought up a few points. First, judges currently have the ability to inform abused people of this right. Frequently, some of the women who are victims of this sort of abuse may be mentally unstable, and in many cases it is the evaluation of a judge not to deliberately inform the victim. This takes away the judge’s discretion. Second, so many of the women who undergo this sort of abuse are so emotionally attached to their abuser, usually due to their own emotional problems or treatment they underwent as a child, that they would never utilize that firearm, even if it was warranted. The question of whether this would be a net positive or net negative is still up for grabs, specifically as I understand the act of learning to master a firearm is tremendously empowering and may help those women through some of their own emotional and self-confidence issues. I’d love to hear more thoughts on this one, from all sides.

  1. I think in order to call it “reintroducing” a species, that species would have to have been here at some point. Perhaps we should start by reintroducing the buffalo.

  3. Does anyone remember a the movie, “Jurissic Park”? I think that if they were meant to be here, they would be here.

I think that someone who is being abused has a right to get a gun. You don’t have to kill the person, just shoot him in a spot, below the belt, that will put him out of business for a while.
