Government shows no bottom line [profit] and because of this will eventually go the way of the USSR. It's a black hole for the wealth previously created by useful men and appears like it will last forever.

A business lasts only as long as there is a bottom line mostly in the black. There's the difference.

Of course, this says nothing of power-deranged institutional minds [found in government] whacking folks over the head to grab this wealth before it all disappears, amongst a host of other whackings at home and abroad.

Folks eventually turn on the whackers in some form or other if they're not dead from the neck up. Historical results have not been a pretty sight, but we all know that already, don't we.

Color me Peggy Blue for these additional reasons she didn't bring up. Apparently she's never thought about 'em.

This goes back to the basic contention of why people assume that businesses are better run than governments. Most businesses fail or muddle along.

Businesses that succeed are often hi-jacked by people who think that the Company's mission is to be looted by its executives at the expense of its stockholders

The analogy of course is that the successful United States government has been hi-jacked by its executive and looted with sweetheart deals and needless tax breaks for the executives and those who know them, at the expense of the stockholders --- the honest taxpayers.

The Founders may or may not have contemplated a limited Federal government. They definitely understood, as a later President would say, that "The business of America is business."

Hard to know why Peggy Noonan is so blue.

After George W- appoints one of her boys to the Supreme Court, I expect that Peggy will recant the entire line of articles.
