Warming or Cooling?

I was watching The Daily Show last night, Al Gore was on. Apparently, in the movie An Inconvenient Truth, he shows what will happen if the ice caps melt, causing much of Florida, pretty much all of Manhattan, etc to be under water.

But I was struck by something… They changed their tune a couple of years ago. The new fear is “Abrupt Climate Change“, where the gulfstream stops flowing in the oceans and a new ice age begins.

What happened? Is Al Gore not keeping up with the talking points? We don’t have to worry about Manhattan being under water, if the movies are any indication, we need to worry about it being under ice.

  1. If global warming happens too quickly, apparently it’ll throw us into an ice age. It seems counterintuitive, but I had it explained to me once and it seemed to make sense. (Unfortunately I cannot seem to remember the explanation).

  2. The explanation I heard was melting ice caps would inject cold freshwater into the warm gulf stream that travels through the oceans. This is what they say makes our climate stable, and thus the disruption of the gulf stream will trigger the ice age.

So if it gets warmer, they’re right. If it gets colder, they’re right. Any idea why I don’t like the “Heads I win, tails you lose” game they’re playing?
