Who’s Buying This Crap?
Maybe two years ago, I was in the store and started seeing White Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter cups as well as Dark Chocolate varieties. I love dark chocolate, as I don’t have a huge sweet tooth, and those things were great.
Shortly thereafter, the dark chocolate version disappeared. They’re still selling the white chocolate, and I just saw today that they’ve released some sort of peanut-butter-and-marshmallow cup (milk chocolate).
I don’t get it. While anecdotal evidence isn’t worth much, I have run into hundreds of people who love dark chocolate. And maybe a handful that like white chocolate. Why in the world would they stop selling the Dark Chocolate Reese’s??
PS – I’m not 100% sure they’ve completely stopped selling them, but I haven’t seen them in at least a year. So if they’re not selling them, they’ve definitely stopped distributing them widely.

Probably overstock. Hersey would not dare sell them here in Pennsylvania
Since you are working on anecdotal evidence, let me note that my wife and several of my coworkers are devoted dark chocolate fans, and they prefer straight dark chocolate. They just don’t want PB or marshmallows or any of that other crap on there.
Perhaps they represent the majority of dark chocolate lovers, whereas people like me who love anything sweet will literally eat that shit up on milk chocolate or white chocolate.
VRB,
I checked up on Hershey’s site, and it’s not overstock. They introduced all of them at once, as a limited edition, in 2003. Then, in 2004, they re-introduced the white chocolate ones (without explanation why they didn’t re-introduce the dark).
Wulf,
That might be the case… But I’d personally buy Reese’s a lot more often if they sold the dark than if they don’t. I’m sure there would be a sizeable market for it.
Brad,
I am a dark chocolate fan as well, but missed the dark chocolate Reese’s.
Last year, Kellie and I were big fans of the dark chocolate M&M’s that were released as part of a tie-in to Revenge of the Sith (you know, the dark side, but with chocolate). We actually called the company on them and were told that this was a limited release product and that they probably wouldn’t be made again after current stock ran out.
And one more thing……
White Chocolate doesn’t contain any chocolate at all !
