There’s the old proverb, “May you live in exciting times”. Personally, I’d prefer space travel and wild technological progress, rather than this sort of “excitement.”

I know what you mean. All this escalation PLUS the WTO talks failing makes it hard for me to be optimistic about progress in the future. The last few covers of The Economist seem to bode ill as well.
The only solace I have is that the financial markets don’t seem to be panicking.
