Michigan State Fires John L. Smith

I can’t say we didn’t see this coming…

Smith Won’t Return as Michigan St. Coach

John L. Smith will not return next year as Michigan State’s football coach but will complete the rest of this season, with the Spartans struggling again in the Big Ten.

Smith is in the fourth year of a six-year contract that pays him about $1.5 million annually.

“The performance on the field has not lived up to what we hoped it would be,” athletic director Ron Mason said during a new conference Wednesday. “It comes time to make a change, and that’s where we’re at.”

Just two weeks ago, the Spartans pulled off the greatest comeback in Division I-A history by rallying from 35 points down to beat Northwestern 41-38. But typical of Michigan State’s inconsistency under Smith, the Spartans (4-5) lost 46-21 at Indiana last Saturday to fall to 1-4 in the Big Ten.

Of course, this had to happen this week. In three days, the Boilermakers head to East Lansing to face the Spartans. Now, when a coach is fired mid-season, it usually results in the team becoming even more lost than usual. But in typical MSU fashion, they’re letting Smith coach out the rest of the season, and knowing MSU, they’ll come out ready to play on Saturday.

This is a team that can be blowing the doors off of Notre Dame, and then lose. Likewise, they can get trampled by Northwestern, only to mount a historic comeback. I’d like to think this helps Purdue this weekend, but with MSU’s history, the one thing I know is that whatever I think will happen— probably won’t.

PS — This week’s true “Game of the Week”, WVU at Louisville, will be played tomorrow (Thursday) night. I’m planning on putting my pick for this game up tomorrow, and will continue with the normal picks on Saturday.

  3. [...] For many of the teams at the bottom of the Big Ten, you look at the good signs that they may be headed upwards. This team has been heading down for several years, and this year was the worst. It’s bad news when you announce mid-season that your coach is getting fired, it’s even worse when there are rumors circulating that the players were happy about it. [...]
