Quote Of The Day — Liberal Bias Edition

Seen on a bumper sticker:

REALITY Has A Liberal Bias

Now, humanity has a liberal bias. Most of humanity is caring, generous, kind, forgiving, and willing to accept and look past the failure of others.

Reality? Not so much. Reality is cruel, reality is harsh, reality punishes mistakes without remorse. Reality doesn’t give many second chances. Reality is the exact opposite of what could be called “liberal”.

Now, I’ll admit that it makes for a catchy little slogan. But it’s a profound misunderstanding of the world we live in. In fact, it was the “illiberal” system of capitalism that is precisely what has allowed us to blunt the harsh “conservative” nature of reality.

  1. > Reality is the exact opposite of what could be called “liberal”.

Reality is the state of the world as it really is, regardless of whether this is perceived by any mind, human or otherwise. (Unless you’re one of those “if a tree falls in a forest and there’s nobody there, it actually doesn’t make a sound” folks, of course!) Labels like “liberal” and “conservative” are perspectives of human thought and attempting to cast reality as either like one or the other is a misapplication of language. But if I had to describe reality as anything it would be “authoritarian” as you cannot debate its rules nor beg its mercy.

I disagree fundamentally on whether “liberal” and “conservative” are even opposite sides of a coin; they’re not even the same currency. You can be a liberal conservative capitalist, or an authoritarian progressive socialist, etc., if you wanted to directly pair things with their opposites in a simplified 3-space of belief.

This of course makes you correct when you say that reality is the exact opposite of what could be called “liberal”, not because reality is conservative, but because the opposite of liberal is authoritarian.

And if you mean “liberal” in a Fox News, non-libertarian sense, for shame. Stop polluting the word liberal and the ideology of liberalism, which is the antithesis of authoritarianism, not conservatism. Call the modern US branch of politickers who call themselves “liberals” by what they really are — whatever it is they are. If you figure out, you should really tell someone, because they’ve been shopping for an identity for quite some time.

-Sam, your friendly neighborhood geolibertarian idiot.

  2. The natural tendencies of humans compared to reality. It is a response to reality. I would not call the response liberal, I would call it a survival strategy.
